Antique Japanese Carved Cypress Noh Mask
Japanese carved Cypress Noh Mask, circa 1890. Measures: 6 1/2 × 5 7/8 × 2 1/2 inches
Note: Noh is a style of musical drama with plots ranging from Japanese legends to modern-day events that date back almost 1,000 years. The expressionless masks used by the actors are carved from blocks of cypress. The actors are tasked with portraying the characters’ feelings by changing the angle and orientation of their heads.
