Rare Nigerian 20th Century Bawa Ushafa Abuja Pottery Vase

Nigerian mid-20th century Abuja Pottery four handled vase by Bawa Ushafa under Michael Cardew. This elegant tall vase has incised decoration with a celadon green and oxidized iron red glaze. Signed on foot “B.U.A.” for Bawa Ushafa. Height: 15 1/2 in., diameter: 7 1/2 in.

Note: In 1950, the Nigerian government asked Michael Cardew to set up a pottery training center at Abuja, Nigeria with the aim of providing work for the locals. Bawa Ushafa, the first trainee at the Abuja Pottery, was the senior potter of the ten throwers working under Cardew in the early 1960s.
