Very Rare Mid-Century Modern Willem de Kooning Deux Femmes Aubusson Tapestry

Rare Aubusson Tapestry after De Kooning, titled “Deux Femmes”. Woven and published by Atelier Marcel Mayeux Tapisserie D’Aubusson, signed in weave, l.r. and numbered 2 from an edition of 8 on verso. Bears original label sewn to verso, woven in wool on a cotton foundation.
Dimension: 6 feet 5 1/2 inches x 7 feet 1 1/2 in. (196.8 cm x 217.2 cm).

Note: Many artists commissioned tapestries like this (Picasso, Miro, Calder, etc. etc), but this was the ONLY one ever done by DeKooning. In the 1970’s there was a gallery on 57th Street between Madison and 5th in New York City, called Modern Masters. They specialized in all of the Aubusson tapestries by all of the famous artists. I have images of the original catalogue from 1978 and their price lists from both 1976 and 1978. In 1976, this was priced at $18,000 and in 1978 it was sold out at $24,000. I am happy to provide images of the price lists and catalogue to any interested parties as well as to answer any questions. I have also spoken to the DeKooning Foundation. It’s a very unique piece.
